folding chairs
|

chinese characters. try to avoid them usually but the monument
was pretty reflective and, well, i'm weak.
also a sucker for a good wood grain.
the folding chairs were a nice surprise. not what a westerner expects
to see at a buddhist temple. brings me back to the church basement
when i was a kid. sundays after service eating donuts, cookies and
almost fermented orange juice. folding chairs with the desk attachment
at school with decades of graffiti chizzled into the rotting wood.

Hyo Soon and her husband Mr. Kim invited me to join them on Buddha's birthday. got up really early, went out to their small temple, HongNyeonAm - totally unprepared for the day ahead. it was really cold and rainy and i had no jacket.
HongNyeonAm is a small Zen temple hidden away in the hills.
thought i was only going to be with them for a few hours. after an exhausting series of activities the day was capped off by walking around the temple in a line for 90 minutes chanting 'seokamonipul'. i got home at 10:30pm and passed out.
some parts of the day reminded me of my youth, waiting for sermons to end at church.
but the experience, in retrospect, was of great value to me.
if they ask me to join them again next year i'll accept the invitation without hesitation.
boredom, monotony, and lack of comfort.
try it some time.
a nice shot in the attention deficit arm. a good way to reset your system
and get a more balanced view of life.
thank you Hyo Soon for inviting me and for always worrying about my health!
(the symbol on the green and white lantern isn't a national socialist swastika, it's a buddhist symbol.)

i really like what B&W did for the wood paneling above
the bavarian like holzwerk stuff....
black and white did less for the rooftops, i think...

whenever i visit a temple i make sure to peek behind the buildings. from the front, the temptation to say, "if you've seen one, you've seen them all" is great.
last time i found a broom... another time women preparing BiBimBab.
in spring the dust from china is getting to be a major annoyance.
i took the idea for the lamp from several traditional teahouses i have visited. it was fun and not so difficult. choosing the paper is the funnest part.
the dog was so at peace. next life - dog at buddhist temple.

Accidental, tripod-free photography. This sequence kind of ties together religion, meditation, tea, and hidden desires.
