this padthai restaurant is right next to a heavily trafficked road. car exhaust causes the dinginess. i stopped here to eat to justify taking the picture. they served great padthai...
just down the road from here was a little korean cafe. i shocked the owner a bit when i ordered in korean. i realized i was missing being able to communicate with people. i learned as much thai as i could in 2 weeks. no one really cared, i was just another tourist...
the pepsi boat was a bit much. i wasn't sure exactly who was being marketed to here. is it aimed at locals or at tourists?

i wonder what the 'woman hand temple' lady was thinking about.
did she forget to do something?
images of Buddha. pretty hard to do much more than has already been done.
don't want to get stuck in postcard hell.
but i like what happens to gold when it is inverted.
on the computer screen the blue really glows. it gives it an other-worldly quality.

i regret two things about this trip to Thailand.
first, i went alone. my girlfriend was tied down at work.
2nd, i didn't know any Thai people currently living there so i had no one
to visit.
i hate being a tourist. i'd much rather visit someone than visit somewhere.
or better yet i'd like to live there, for however long it takes to get a little bored.
In Monk Arch Window, notice the tourist on the left side partially hidden by the arch. i wonder if this monk heard my camera click. is it a bad thing to take a picture like this? what would go through your mind if your everyday life became a tourist attraction.
the following five pictures were taken on a rainy day from the window of the cheap hotel i stayed in on khaosan road. i didn't stay long enough at khaosan road to really understand its signifigance. it was quite different but in some ways similar to itaewon in seoul. khoasan thrives as a center for backpacker culture in southeast asia whereas itaewon developed as a shopping and entertainment district for u.s. soldiers and other foreigners in seoul.
the following three shots all come from one photo. the first one is the original close-up shot of a gold leaf design on a temple window shutter. the last one is what came out as i inverted the colors on photoshop. strangely enough it looks just like porcelain.

Guam - U.S.A.
|
|
have gone to Guam two times. once to get a visa. the second time for a 6 day vacation.
Guam is one of the most strategically important islands in the Pacific.
imagine what it would be like to live somewhere strategic. there certainly
isn't anything strategic about Nebraska, where i'm from. it's valuable land to be sure but it's not a foothold to anywhere. Guam is one of America's footholds to Asia. it's an important staging area for America's projection of force in Japan, South Korea among other places. and we're not the first to use Guam this way.
i wonder if the founding fathers and mothers ever conceived that their sons and daughters would turn around and form an empire. are we doing it any better than England? or are we making the same mistakes?
while i was there i was deeply impressed by the people of this island. more about that later, i need a nap...

war in iraq?, bush has moved on...
http://www.counterpunch.org/lindorff07122003.html
a little more post cardy than usual today.
Golden Gate Bridge - the streaks are airplanes. it took
about ten shots to get a decent picture here. thanks Scott
and Amy for taking me down to san francisco!
Missouri River - storm clouds and well lit river. i imagine
some places in africa look like this... took these from a restaurant
that specializes in fried, breaded catfish. not to be eaten without
a plastic cup full of Old Style and don't forget the mosquito repellant.
Scott - what's the name of that place again?
Holland, MI - sunset photos are nice to look at but technically i don't
feel like i did much. Mother Nature did all the work and
i just clicked a button. thanks Khoun and Phet for taking me out
here. it was great to see you guys again and i'll never forget those
sunsets.
Chicago, John Hancock Building - thanks Ben for putting up with
us tourists! i had a great time and it was interesting to watch your
reaction to seeing Chicago from on high.
Now, None, Gone - Chicago graffiti art. again, not my art, but an image i'd like to share.

Hazard, Nebraska and other places
|
|
last time i went home i was struck by the vastness, the flatness.
it sucks some people in, it spits some people out.
for the time being i'm happy out.
but i miss the sky.
in korea signs of the impact of human work are hard to escape.
but there are lots of mountains and trees ~ sections of land that
are not put to work.
'field, train, sky' is so barren and lifeless. rural industrial.
'post and rows' reminds me of japanese stone gardens...
i've never been truly in the wild.
