Japanese Udon
DoDoYa Japanese Restaurant
After Lunch
View all 12 photos...
In small-town Korea (meaning cities that are not Seoul) international fare other than japanese is hard to find. some shots at my favorite place for lunch.

the shredded paper with korean characters is hanging on doors that are used as dividers in many restaurants. traditionally people would wet their fingers and poke holes through the paper to spy on each other.

the last five fotos are from a walk with some friends (japanese and chinese students learning korean) in the small village next to the university. the university is on the edge of town. walk through this village and you're out in the rice fields. walk another fifteen minutes through those fields (actually on a narrow, paved road with cars whizzing by) and you come to the first row of 15+ story apartment buildings. when i first got to korea i was quite put off by these. but now i see the beauty of it. no domino rows of apartments = no great walks through rice fields.

i'd buy the brick - what about you?

ukraine and poland pics soon!

waiting for my Ukraine, Poland pictures to be developed i realized i had a lot of fotos i hadn't worked with yet from Nebraska. i first looked at a lot of them and i passed them over because i hadn't shot them well or the subject matter didn't seem interesting.

Haunted house is in Mason city. The suburbia shots are from the deck of the house in SE Lincoln, where i'm stuck right now.

public transportation in this state is criminally deficient.

well at least i'm getting some work done today...

Anna's Park
Champions
Chris and Choir
View all 9 photos...
Anna's Park is across the street from what looks like an old out-of-use mill in Mason City.

Champions - watching the game at the N-Zone.

My sister Chris teaching choir class in Pleasonton. they were singing selections from Veggietales and having a blast.

Mason City Craft artist's snowmen, decorations for Christmas.

Crow Bar and Grill in Mason City. They were cooking some fabulous smelling mexican food that evening.

Gabe is a friend of mine who's trying to make it in Hollywood. here he poses as he lights his cigarette. i can think of at least a dozen less painful and more efficient ways to avoid living forever.

The Scrap Iron Bison was made by an artist in Mason City that recently passed away. he also made the scrap iron devil above and the machine gunner in my oct 30th post. a lot of my pictures are of other folks' art. i need to think about that for a while...

We don't want an arm and a leg, we just Want Your Tows. this was sitting in the parking lot of the Hilltop Mall in Kearney. it was there all day - is this advertising? or was the tow-truck having mechanical problems? i'll find out next time i go to Kearney.

'See us for all your livestock needs' - Zoerb Livestock. I like how an even older sign is showing through. Mason City, NE

tea house candle
train pulls in
Tea House Candle: this is taechucha - date tea. served hot or cold depending on the season. it's a little chalky but mmmmmm.... delicious. at this tea house people leave notes in notebooks at each table. kind of like a bbs. people leave drawings, poems, complaints, observations.

Train Pulls In: so many mistakes went into the making of this image. i didn't intend for the conductor to be in the frame. my camera was not set properly for the film. the lens was full of glass dust from a shattered filter. the development was super shabby. the scan was done in color not BW. the scanner had smudges all over the glass. so i very inexpertly worked on it in photoshop. tada! um voila! well i like it anyway...

that image was worth the effort ! Sat 18-Oct-2003 15:53

Sunset Pocari Sweat
ROK Marine Veteran
Buddha Inverted with Candle
Having been on the move for the last two months it's a real pleasure to get a few fotos up.

Sunset Pocari Sweat - the pop machine's blue and the gold of the setting sun really complement each other. natural light versus interior.

inverted Buddha with Candle - i just can't look at gold statues anymore without getting a little bored.

this Republic of Korea (ROK) Marine veteran was in a line behind other similar looking guys on bikes. it was a parade commemorating 'independence movement day'. judging from his age i guess he's a vietnam war vet. Over 300,000 korean soldiers served on behalf of the U.S. in vietnam. around 5,000 died.

The contrast of the soft colors of the clouds combined with the harsh barbed wire on the N/S Korea border is wonderful, what a statement! A man/made yin/yang peace/war - poetic!!! Fri 15-Aug-2003 01:04
